Linux Xorg Settings

When using AskLink on certain Linux distributions (such as Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, CentOS, Arch, Manjaro, or openSUSE), you may encounter issues like a black screen, failed connections, or abnormal input.
These problems are often caused by your system running a Wayland session.
It’s recommended to switch to an Xorg (X11) session for a more stable remote control experience.

This guide only covers how to switch sessions through the graphical user interface (GUI) — no command line operations are required.

Before You Begin

  • The session must be changed on the login screen (before entering your password).
    Doing this on the lock screen will not work.
  • If your system is set to log in automatically, log out first to return to the login screen.
  • While the interface may vary slightly across distributions, the key step is the same:
    Select an Xorg / X11 session at the login screen → then log in.

Steps

GNOME Desktop (Ubuntu / Debian / Fedora and similar)

For systems that use the GDM login manager with a gear icon on the login screen:

  1. On the login screen, click your username.
  2. When the password field appears, click the gear icon near the bottom or next to the password box.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select:
    • Ubuntu on Xorg (for Ubuntu), or
    • GNOME on Xorg (for other GNOME-based systems), or
    • Any option containing “X11” or “Xorg”.
  4. Enter your password to log in.
  5. Try using AskLink again after logging in.

KDE Plasma Desktop (Manjaro / openSUSE / Arch / Fedora KDE and similar)

For systems that use the SDDM login manager with a Session button at the bottom or corner of the screen:

  1. On the login screen, click the Session button.
  2. In the list, choose Plasma (X11) or KDE Plasma (X11).
  3. Enter your password to log in.
  4. After logging in, use AskLink for remote access.

Xfce / MATE / Cinnamon Desktops (Linux Mint / Xubuntu / Ubuntu MATE and similar)

For systems that use the LightDM login manager with a Session / Desktop switch menu:

  1. On the login screen, locate the Session / Desktop menu (usually a small icon or dropdown at the top or side).
  2. Choose the session that matches your desktop environment, preferring those without “Wayland” in the name, for example:
    • Xfce Session
    • MATE
    • Cinnamon
  3. Enter your password to log in.

Most LightDM-based desktops already use Xorg by default.
As long as you don’t explicitly select a “Wayland” session, no extra configuration is needed.
